Control of Cytoplasmic Inheritance in Plants
Inheritance is one of the most fundamental biological processes. While nuclear DNA is inherited from both parents, plastid and mitochondrial genomes are typically inherited exclusively through the maternal line.
Despite more than a century of scientific research, major questions remain unanswered:
- Why does maternal inheritance occur?
- How is maternal inheritance established?
- Can inheritance patterns be manipulated?
This project aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms responsible for maternal inheritance of plastid and mitochondrial genomes in plants. Researchers will explore ways to engineer alternative inheritance patterns, including biparental and paternal transmission of organelle genomes.
The findings could transform our understanding of plant genetics and open new opportunities in crop improvement, plant breeding, and biotechnology.
